Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh Granted 54-Day Leave, Centre Informs HC

The Central Government today informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh has been granted a 54-day leave. The information was presented before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel, just weeks after the Lok Sabha Speaker constituted a 15-member committee to review leave applications of MPs, including Amritpal Singh.

Amritpal Singh had expressed concerns that his absence exceeding 60 days could lead to his seat being declared vacant, potentially impacting nearly 19 lakh constituents. During the resumed hearing, Additional Solicitor-General of India Satya Pal Jain, along with advocate Dheeraj Jain, submitted a March 11 letter issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, confirming that Singh was granted leave for the following periods:

  • June 24, 2024 – July 2, 2024
  • July 22, 2024 – August 9, 2024
  • November 25, 2024 – December 20, 2024

Acknowledging the letter, the Bench stated: “As far as the petitioner’s apprehension regarding disqualification from Parliament due to absence is concerned, his concern has been addressed by the letter dated March 11.”

Regarding Amritpal Singh’s additional request for authorization to meet officials and ministers concerning the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for local development projects, the Bench observed that parliamentary proceedings follow specific rules. It suggested that Singh should submit a formal representation to the Lok Sabha Speaker for any such request.

Amritpal Singh remains in Dibrugarh Central Jail, detained under the National Security Act (NSA).
