Harjinder Singh Dhami resigns as SGPC chief on 'moral grounds'

Meanwhile, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami has stepped down from his position. His resignation follows strong criticism from Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh over the SGPC’s decision to dismiss Giani Harpreet Singh as jathedar of Damdama Sahib.

Dhami has also requested his removal from the seven-member committee formed by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and has submitted his resignation to the SGPC executive committee. Addressing the media in Amritsar, he cited a February 13 Facebook post by Jathedar Raghbir Singh, which labeled Giani Harpreet Singh’s dismissal as “highly condemnable” and “unfortunate.”

Taking moral responsibility, Dhami stated, “As the 'pardhan' (president) of SGPC, I accept responsibility and resign from the post with immediate effect.” He has further written to the Akal Takht Jathedar, requesting to be relieved from his duties in the committee overseeing SAD's new membership drive.
