Former SGPC Chief Badungar Resigns from Akal Takht-Formed Panel
Ahead of the third meeting of the seven-member committee constituted by the Akal Takht to oversee the membership drive and elections of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) office-bearers, former SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar resigned from the panel on Tuesday.
His resignation comes just a day after Harjinder Singh Dhami, the committee's chairperson, stepped down from both the panel and his position as SGPC president.
In a video message, Badungar, known for his allegiance to the Badal family, requested the Akal Takht to accept his resignation. He questioned the committee’s relevance following Dhami’s exit, stating, “How can the meeting take place today without the chairperson?”
He further highlighted the ineffectiveness of the panel, noting that it had already met twice without yielding any concrete results. “Without a chairperson, the committee lacks significance and authority to take decisions,” he added.
The Akal Takht had established the committee on December 2 last year, declaring SAD's incumbent leadership ‘unfit’ to lead the party and assigning the panel to supervise the membership drive and elections. However, the SAD working committee proceeded with the membership drive independently, refusing to hand over control to the Akal Takht-appointed panel.
