Dhami’s Resignation Decision Still Uncertain Amid Ongoing SGPC Developments

Despite declining to withdraw his resignation, former SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has hinted that he may reconsider his decision.

A month ago, the four-time Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president had offered to step down on moral grounds following criticism from former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh. The controversy arose after Giani Harpreet Singh was removed as Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, triggering a backlash on social media.

Dhami had also proposed resigning from the seven-member committee appointed by the Akal Takht to oversee the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) membership drive. However, during the executive meeting on March 7, his resignation was left pending. Meanwhile, the committee terminated the services of Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Sultan Singh as Jathedars of Akal Takht and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, respectively. Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj was appointed as the new Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, along with an additional officiating charge of the Akal Takht.

A member of the SGPC executive body, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “During the last meeting, the sacking of Jathedars and the new appointments were never on the agenda provided to us. This time, we may see a similar surprise regarding Dhami’s case.”

The situation remains fluid as further decisions on Dhami’s resignation are awaited.
