Criminal Opens Fire on Police During Weapon Recovery, Shot in Retaliation in SBS Nagar

A weapon recovery operation turned violent late Thursday night near Buhara village in SBS Nagar when a criminal, accused in an attempted murder case, opened fire on a police team. The accused, identified as Amandeep from Garupur village (under Aurr police station), was injured in retaliatory fire by the police.

According to officials, the operation was led by SHO Abhishek Sharma of SBS Nagar. The police team had taken Amandeep to a canal in Buhara village, where he had reportedly hidden a pistol used in an earlier crime. However, during the search, Amandeep managed to overpower the officers, retrieve the concealed weapon, and fire at the police. One of the bullets struck the SHO’s vehicle.

As Amandeep attempted to fire a second shot, police personnel responded in self-defense, shooting him in the leg. He was immediately subdued and rushed to the Civil Hospital in Nawanshahr for treatment. Security has been tightened around the hospital to prevent any further incidents.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mehtab Singh confirmed the encounter, stating that Amandeep had previously been arrested under Section 307 of the IPC and the Arms Act for an attempted murder case. He added that the accused has a lengthy criminal record, with at least 11 cases registered against him.

A new FIR is being registered, and further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
