Court Directs Vigilance Bureau to Submit Status Report on IGP in ₹20 Lakh Bribery Case
Special Judge Dinesh Kumar Wadhwa has ordered the Vigilance Bureau (VB) to submit a status report on its investigation against an Inspector General of Police (IGP) in connection with a ₹20 lakh bribery case.
The directive came in response to an application filed in the special court in Faridkot by Gagan Dass, the head of Dera Baba Harka Dass, who sought an update on the progress of the investigation.
Background of the Case
The case stems from an alleged ₹50 lakh bribery demand to manipulate the investigation into the 2019 murder of Sant Dayal Dass, the deputy head of the dera. Initially, Sant Jarnail Dass, a rival dera leader, was named as an accused in the murder case but was later given a clean chit by a DIG-rank officer. However, in September 2022, the Punjab and Haryana High Court transferred the investigation to the IGP.
According to the complaint, the IGP allegedly demanded ₹50 lakh to re-nominate Jarnail Dass as an accused. Out of this amount, ₹20 lakh was reportedly paid, leading to the registration of an FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act against several police officials.
Investigation and Charges Filed
The Vigilance Bureau (VB) has already filed a chargesheet against:
- SP Gagnesh Kumar
- DSP Sushil Kumar
- SI Khem Chang
- A private contractor
The FIR was originally registered at Kotkapura Sadar police station on June 2, 2023. However, complainant Gagan Dass has alleged that while action has been taken against other police officials, the VB has remained silent on the role of the IGP.
Following these concerns, the court has now directed the VB to provide a detailed status report on the investigation into the IGP’s involvement in the case.
