Contempt Petition Filed Against Punjab Officials for Alleged Violation of Supreme Court Order on Shambhu Border

A contempt petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against Punjab’s Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police, accusing them of wilfully defying the court’s July 24, 2024 directive to maintain status quo at the Shambhu border to prevent any "untoward incident."

Petitioner Sehajpreet Singh alleged that, in direct violation of the Supreme Court’s order, Punjab Police launched a major operation on March 19, 2025, at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. Led by senior police officials, the operation reportedly involved the use of heavy force, the dismantling of protest sites, illegal arrests, and damage to farmers’ vehicles.

“Contrary to the express orders of this Honorable Court, on 19.03.2025, Punjab Police carried out a large-scale police action,” the petition states. It further claims the events were widely broadcast across media channels and reported by newspapers, clearly showing the forceful eviction of protesting farmers.

On the day of the operation, several farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher, were taken into custody. Protest sites at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders were cleared, with temporary structures dismantled and trolleys and vehicles removed.

The petitioner emphasized that these actions were carried out without obtaining prior permission from the Supreme Court, despite the status quo order being in effect. The petition contends that such conduct amounts to contempt of court and seeks accountability for what it describes as a deliberate violation of judicial directives.
