BKU (Doaba) Activists to Mark Shubhkaran's Death Anniversary at Shambhu Border on Feb 21
The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) (Doaba) has announced its participation in an event at the Shambhu border on February 21 to mark the death anniversary of Shubhkaran, a farm protester. The decision was made during a meeting of BKU (Doaba) leaders and members at Gurdwara Sukhchain Sahib in Phagwara, presided over by BKU (Doaba) president Manjit Singh Rai.
State general secretary Satnam Singh Sahni stated that the gathering would mobilize support for two key events: a mass congregation at Shambhu Border on February 21 and a farmers’ march to Delhi on February 25. The meeting also focused on the long-delayed payments owed to sugarcane farmers by Golden Sandhar Sugar Mill, Phagwara.
According to the plan, 10-15 activists from each BKU (Doaba) circle will travel to the Ladowal toll plaza in Ludhiana on February 21, from where they will proceed together to the Shambhu border. On February 25, a larger group of 500 activists will gather at the same location before marching towards the Shambhu border, with 101 farmers continuing on to Delhi. During the meeting, leaders raised concerns about the unpaid sugarcane dues from the 2021-22 season, amounting to approximately ₹27-28 crore. The Gurjit Rana Group, which took over Golden Sandhar Sugar Mill, had promised to clear the payments, but no money has been released to the farmers even after two years.
The union leaders warned that if the payments are not made, BKU (Doaba) will initiate a stronger protest after February 25 to demand the release of the outstanding arrears.
