Sidhu Moosewala’s Father Balkaur Singh to Contest 2027 Mansa Polls, Vows to Fight for Justice

As the third death anniversary of Sidhu Moosewala approaches, the late singer’s father, Balkaur Singh, has announced his intention to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from the Mansa constituency. Singh said his decision is driven by a desire to seek justice for his son “from within the system.”

Singh voiced strong dissatisfaction with the state government, particularly targeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for what he described as "inaction against gangsters." He specifically criticised the continued freedom of Goldy Brar, the Canada-based gangster and alleged mastermind behind Moosewala’s killing. Despite repeated promises from the authorities, Brar remains at large.

"My entry into politics is not for power, but to restore public faith in justice and to become the voice of those being silenced,” said Balkaur. He aims to focus on justice, public safety, and systemic reform.

Sidhu Moosewala had himself contested from Mansa in the 2022 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket but lost by a significant margin during the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wave.

Moosewala was brutally shot dead on May 29, 2022, near his native village Jawarhke in Mansa district. As the third anniversary of his murder approaches, a memorial ceremony and religious service (“path”) have been organised at his cremation site in Musa village. Fans from across Punjab and beyond are expected to attend. His statue at the site has been refurbished, and tents and other arrangements have been made for the memorial event.

Legal Setbacks and Developments

In a recent blow to the investigation, retired Station House Officer (SHO) Angrej Singh, who was the original investigating officer and a key witness, passed away on May 24, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was due to testify in court on May 23 but missed the hearing due to medical issues. His death may significantly weaken the prosecution’s case.

A senior police official acknowledged that Singh had firsthand knowledge crucial to the case. "The new officer will have to study the case from scratch, but certain firsthand observations and investigative instincts cannot be recreated,” he said.

To date, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed five chargesheets against 32 accused, including prominent gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and Goldy Brar. In May 2024, the Mansa Sessions Court formally framed charges against 27 arrested individuals under various sections, including murder. However, Goldy Brar, the primary accused, remains untraced, and charges against him are yet to be framed.

Two eyewitnesses, Gurwinder and Gurpreet—who were with Moosewala during the attack—have testified in court, identifying four shooters: Priyavart Fauji, Ankit Sersa, Deepak Mundi, and Kashish (alias Kuldeep). Gurwinder also identified Jagroop Singh (alias Roopa) and Manpreet Singh (alias Mannu Kussa), who were later killed in a police encounter in 2022.

Additionally, another accused, Sandeep Kekra, was identified as the person who provided real-time location updates to Goldy Brar. On the day of the murder, Kekra allegedly took selfies with Moosewala outside his home before riding off on a motorcycle moments before the attack.

Balkaur Singh is scheduled to testify in court on June 4, a moment that could further spotlight the family's long quest for justice in one of Punjab’s most high-profile murder cases in recent memory.
