Phagwara CIA Team Remanded for Bribery in Drug Smuggler Release Case

In a major embarrassment for law enforcement, nearly the entire Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team of Phagwara — including in-charge Sub-Inspector Bisman Singh Sahi, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Nirmal Kumar and Jaswinder Singh, and Head Constable Jagroop Singh — has been remanded to five more days of police custody. The officers were produced before a local Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday after their initial remand, following their arrest on May 23.

According to Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, the officers were apprehended for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹2.5 lakh in exchange for releasing a suspected drug smuggler. The accused, Sukhwinder Kumar alias Honey, a resident of Kanshi Nagar in Phagwara, had been taken into custody by the CIA team a few days prior for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

SSP Toora emphasized the department’s firm stance on misconduct, stating, "A zero-tolerance policy is being strictly enforced against corruption within the force."

The case has triggered concerns about internal accountability and the integrity of anti-narcotics operations in the region. Further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the involvement and whether additional personnel may be implicated.
