Bikram Singh Majithia Appears in Court in Defamation Case Against AAP’s Sanjay Singh
Amritsar, June 4, 2025:
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia appeared before a local court today in connection with a defamation case he filed against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders in 2016. The case stems from allegedly defamatory remarks made during political rallies ahead of the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections.
Majithia expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of AAP leader Sanjay Singh, accusing him of deliberately evading court proceedings. "Sanjay Singh has once again failed to appear in court. It is clear he is trying to avoid the hearing," Majithia said after his appearance.
The defamation case originally named three AAP leaders—Arvind Kejriwal, Ashish Khetan, and Sanjay Singh. While Arvind Kejriwal and Ashish Khetan later apologised in court, leading Majithia to formally forgive them, Sanjay Singh has stood his ground, refusing to apologise and opting to contest the charges in court.
Filed in May 2016, the case has seen several developments, but Sanjay Singh’s decision to not seek a settlement has kept the matter ongoing. The court is expected to announce further proceedings shortly.
The case highlights lingering political tensions between the SAD and AAP, particularly over the fiery and often personal nature of campaign rhetoric during past elections.
